Meta Ads vs Google Ads: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Business owners ask us this question more than almost any other: should I advertise on Facebook and Instagram, or on Google? The honest answer is that it depends on how your customers buy. Both platforms can bring you enquiries. They simply reach people at different moments.
The key difference: intent or interest
Google Ads shows your ad to people who are already searching for what you offer. Someone types “dental clinic near me” or “interior designers in Malappuram”, and your ad appears at the top of the results. These people have a need right now.
Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) shows your ad to people based on who they are and what they are interested in, usually before they have started looking. You choose the location, age range and interests, and your ad appears in their feed, Stories or Reels while they scroll.
In short, Google helps you get found by people who are ready, and Meta helps you get noticed by people who have not found you yet.
When Google Ads is usually the better first step
- People search for your service when they need it, such as clinics, repairs, rentals, courses or professional services.
- Many of your sales start with a phone call.
- You have a website or landing page that clearly explains your offer.
- You want to reach people in a specific town, district or country.
Because people are already searching, search campaigns can bring in enquiries quickly. You usually pay when someone clicks, so the keywords you choose and the page people land on make a big difference to what each enquiry costs.
When Meta Ads is usually the better first step
- Your product or service looks good in photos and videos, such as food, fashion, interiors, property, beauty or events.
- People do not often search for what you sell, so they need to discover you.
- Your sales happen in conversation, on WhatsApp or Messenger.
- You are launching something new, like a new branch, product or offer.
Meta Ads can also send people straight into a WhatsApp chat with your business, which works very well for many businesses in Kerala and the Gulf. We explain how in our guide to Click-to-WhatsApp ads.
What about using both?
Many businesses get their best results by combining the two. Meta Ads builds awareness and interest, and Google Ads captures people when they are ready to search. You can also show Meta ads to people who have already visited your website, to remind them about you.
If your budget is small, though, it is usually better to start with one platform, learn what works and then add the second. Splitting a small budget across too many campaigns makes it hard for any of them to perform well.
Questions to ask before you spend
- How do your customers find businesses like yours today?
- What does a good lead look like for you, and what is a new customer worth?
- Can you reply to enquiries quickly, including on WhatsApp?
- Is your website or landing page ready to turn visitors into enquiries?
If the last answer is no, fix that first. Sending paid traffic to a slow or confusing website wastes money on either platform. Our article on why websites do not get enquiries covers the most common problems.
How much do you need to spend?
There is no single number that suits every business. It depends on your competition, the area you want to reach and what you want people to do. Your ad budget is paid directly to Meta or Google from your own account, and it is separate from any agency management fee.
Whatever you spend, give a new campaign a few weeks of testing and improvement before you judge it. The first days are when the platforms learn who responds to your ads.
Our advice
Start where your customers already are. If they search for you, begin with Google. If they need to see you first, or they prefer to chat, begin with Meta. Then measure what matters: enquiries and customers, not just clicks and likes.
